| Welcome to www.englishmastiffs.org. A global network directory of English Mastiffs. Mastiff like dogs can be traced back 3000 years to Egyptian artifacts. The mastiff's were used as dogs of war up to the 17th century. They were also used to hunt bears and wolves. Mastiff's are considered by many as gentle giants. They are considered a working breed and have been used as cart dogs, pack dogs as well as guard dogs. The coat is short and the colors are fawn, brindle or apricot with a dark face mask. The average mastiff weighs about 185 lbs. and is 32 inches tall at the shoulder. The Mastiff is also called the English Mastiff. There are also Bull Mastiffs.
